The 1968 Season Set. The year of the pitcher!  1968 is one of the most memorable seasons in MLB history.  It was the last season of the traditional two-league, non-division, system in the Major Leagues.  Expansion would take place in 1969 but that wasn't the only thing that would change.  1969 would also see a change in the height of the pitching mound because of the dominance of pitching throughout the 1960s and reaching its peak in 1968.  Denny McLain won 31 games for the Detroit Tigers and Bob Gibson of the St. Louis Cardinals set a modern ERA record of 1.12.  Don Drysdale of the Los Angeles Dodgers set an MLB record of 58 2/3 scoreless innings.  Not only did McLain and Gibson win the Cy Young Award in their respective leagues, they also added the MVP award.  There still were impressive performances at the plate but the league averages for batting average and slugging percentage were in the basement.  Pete Rose hit .335.  Frank Howard belted 44 Home Runs and Willie McCovey hit 35.  The Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals ran away with the AL and NL races.  That set up a tremendous World Series clash against a background of cultural upheaval throughout the nation.  The Detroit Tigers won the 1968 Fall Classic in a seven game epic with Mickey Lolich winning three complete games including a game seven masterpiece against Bob Gibson.  Relive it all with Dugout Steps Baseball and the 1968 Season Set.
