Baseball returns! With the cancellation of the 1994 season in August and no World Series, the baseball world was in limbo. The players and owners finally came to an agreement and baseball would be back by late April with an abbreviated 144 game schedule. Once the players took the field, the baseball was terrific. The Cleveland Indians won 100 games in the abbreviated season and looked to be a clear favorite in the postseason, which was expanded in 1995 to include a Wild Card team in each league and what would be called a Divisional Round. Traditionalists did not like the expanded format but that was soon forgotten when the Yankees and Mariners played an outstanding 5 game series. Who could forget the raucous Kingdome crowd, Randy Johnson striding in from the bullpen like a gunslinger and The Kid, Ken Griffey Jr. smiling ear to ear as he slid across home plate with the series winning run. The Mariners went on to face the Cleveland Indians for a World Series birth. The Tribe took it 4 games to 2. In the National League, the ever-present Atlanta Braves were still searching for a World Series title in Atlanta. They beat the Rockies in the Divisional Round and swept the Cincinnati Reds to advance to the Fall Classic. The 1995 World Series was a tight, well played affair. The Braves took the series in 6 games and Atlanta finally had a World Series champion. The Braves also became the first franchise to win a World Series in three different cities: Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta. Perhaps the most memorable moment of the 1995 season was the night Cal Ripken Jr. broke Lou Gehrig’s seemingly un-matchable record for consecutive games played. Cal Ripken Jr. played in his 2,131st game on September 6th at Oriole Park at Camden yards. Mo Vaughn was named AL MVP and Barry Larkin won NL MVP. Greg Maddux was named NL Cy Young and Randy Johnson the AL CY Young. Marty Cordova won the Junior Circuit Rookie of the Year award while Hideo Nomo took it home in the Senior Circuit. Baseball returned in 1995, with epic, memorable moments. Relive them all with Dugout Steps Baseball and the 1995 Season Set.
