The 1978 NFL Season Set.  The 1978 NFL Season featured some big changes.  The regular season schedule was expanded from 14 to 16 games.  The league also expanded the number of playoff teams from 8 to 10, adding a second wild card team in each conference.  Two rule changes were introduced that would change the game.  To open up the passing game, the league changed the rules regarding defending receivers to only allow a defender to bump and chuck a receiver within 5 yards from the line of scrimmage.  This would change the passing game forever.  Another notable and less talked about rule change allowed pass blockers to extend arms and block with open hands.  Both of these were intended to improve and increase the passing game.  It worked!  Eleven Quarterbacks threw for more yards in 1978 than the league leader did in 1977.  The Pittsburgh Steelers bounced back from a sub-par 1977 season to post the league best record of 14-2 led by NFL MVP Terry Bradshaw.  Roger Staubach led the Dallas Cowboys to a 12-4 record and a very stiff defense out west led the Los Angeles Rams to a 12-4 record.  The Steelers thumped their division rival the Houston Oilers and the Dallas Cowboys easily dispatched the Rams to meet in Super Bowl XIII.  Thirteen turned out to be a lucky one as the Cowboys and Steelers locked up in a great game befitting the great rise of the Steelers as they won their 3rd Super Bowl.  Earl Campbell, the Tyler Rose stormed the NFL running over would be tacklers to lead the league in rushing.  1978 is a truly historical year in the NFL.  Relive it all with Sideline Football and the 1978 Season Set.
